About the Program – Ohio Department of Development Funds

The Brownfield Remediation and Building Demolition and Site Revitalization is designed to provide grants for remediation of brownfield sites and demolition on sites that are not brownfields to clean up assets and prepare them for future economic development, revitalizing communities across the state. The programs were initiated 7/1/21 by legislation in Ohio for funds to be obligated through 6/30/23. GRANT APPLICATIONS for these programs will not be accepted until January 1, 2022, leaving 1 ½ years to distribute the funds.

Ohio Brownfield Remediation Fund supplies $350 million in grants for the remediation of brownfield sites across Ohio to clean up the sites and prepare them for future economic development.
A brownfield is defined as an abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial, commercial, or institutional property where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by known or potential releases of hazardous substances or petroleum.

The fund reserves $1,000,000 to be awarded in each of Ohio’s 88 counties to eligible applicants without a match requirement until July 1, 2022. The remaining $262 million will be awarded with a 25% match requirement on a first come, first served basis to eligible applicants.

Eligible applicants include: a county, township, municipal corporation, port authority, or conservancy district or a park district, or other similar park authority. These entities are collectively referred to as “units of local government”. Other eligible applicants include a county land reutilization corporation, nonprofit organization, or organization for profit. These entities must have entered into an agreement with a unit of local government to work in conjunction on the project for the purposes of this program.
Application Deadlines:
• Round 1- January 31,
• Round 2 (only for reserved funds not yet awarded) – April 30; and
• Round 3 (for all remaining funds) -September 30.

Ohio Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Fund supplies grants for the demolition of commercial and residential buildings and revitalization of surrounding properties on sites that are not brownfields. This fund reserves $500,000 to be awarded in each of Ohio’s 88 counties to eligible applicants without a match requirement until July 1, 2022. The remaining $106 million will be awarded with a 25% match requirement on a first come, first served basis to eligible applicants.

Eligible Applicants include: Each county must establish a “Lead Entity” to execute and administer the grand agreement for the fund. Where a land reutilization corporation exists in a county, this shall be the Lead Entity. If no land reutilization corporation exists in a county, the Board of County Commissioners must identify another unit of local government to serve as a Lead Entity.
Application Deadlines: Initial deadline – February 28.
