Ramona Avenue Grade Separation

Grade Separation Construction Project

The work involved roadway construction, construction of new utilities and relocation of existing utilities, construction of a bridge over railroad tracks, sidewalks, drainage and signalized intersections. The foundation of abutments 1 and 4, and bent 2 consisted of precast concrete piles. Due to the presence of fiber optic lines underneath the bent 3 footings, CIDH were used in lieu of precast concrete piles to avoid any possible damage to the fiber optic lines. Bents 2 and 3 had two reinforced concrete columns, and a crash wall connected the two columns at bent 3.

The embankment approaches for this bridge were retained by constructing Mechanically Stabilized Embankment (MSE) retaining walls. Two retaining walls were constructed on the west and east of abutment 4 approach. The length of these walls is 482 feet and 460 feet, respectively. There was a shorter MSE wall constructed on the west side of the abutment 1 to retain the embankment. The main challenges entailed relocating a number of existing utility lines that were not shown in the contract documents and working in proximity to the busy Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) tracks, maintaining public convenience at all times and maintaining traffic for local businesses. TRC facilitated the contractor’s cooperation with UPRR in order to complete the project.

TRC provided full construction management services for this $18 million grade separation project in the City of Montclair.
