Integrated, strategic solutions to successfully navigate compliance and move projects forward.

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is one of the most important regulations you have to keep in mind during project development. NEPA compliance protects your site, the surrounding areas and your local community by monitoring and, where possible, mitigating the environmental effects of every project. At TRC, we are dedicated to helping you succeed with NEPA compliance solutions you need to achieve your project goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about NEPA compliance and how TRC can help you achieve it with some of our most frequently asked questions.

Since 1970, all federal agencies have been subjected to the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA. NEPA requires all federal agencies to evaluate the environmental effects of any projects or actions they undertake and, where necessary, adjust their course of action to limit negative impacts. This includes:

  • Using all practical means of mitigating the effects of land expansion and hazardous materials use on nature.
  • Incorporating environmental initiatives in an agency’s planning and decision-making processes.
  • Completing regular Environmental Assessments (EAs) and submitting detailed explanations known as Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) of how projects may affect the local geography.
  • Following all regulations and guidance set forth by the President’s Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).

NEPA was designed to be as expansive as possible, allowing a broad range of projects and operations to fall under its scope. If your federal organization is participating in a project involving any of these, it’s likely subject to NEPA compliance:

  • Projects involving permit requirements
  • Managing federal land
  • Construction of publicly-owned facilities, like highways and bridges
