Since 1970, all federal agencies have been subjected to the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA. NEPA requires all federal agencies to evaluate the environmental effects of any projects or actions they undertake and, where necessary, adjust their course of action to limit negative impacts. This includes:
- Using all practical means of mitigating the effects of land expansion and hazardous materials use on nature.
- Incorporating environmental initiatives in an agency’s planning and decision-making processes.
- Completing regular Environmental Assessments (EAs) and submitting detailed explanations known as Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) of how projects may affect the local geography.
- Following all regulations and guidance set forth by the President’s Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).
