Replacement of I-10 over Lake Pontchartrain

TRC was a member of the Consultant Team that was selected by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) to design the replacement structure for I-10 over Lake Pontchartrain, an undertaking that was prompted as a result of catastrophic damage suffered in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The new $800 million twin bridges are each approximately 5.4 miles in length, with the majority of the structure consisting of repetitive, low-level concrete spans. A high-level bridge is included as part of the structure to accommodate marine traffic.

TRC was charged with providing geotechnical consultation during the design effort, in addition to structural engineering support. From a geotechnical perspective, TRC geotechnical staff reviewed subsurface data from the existing bridge and provided preliminary geotechnical analysis and recommendations for precast concrete piles and drilled piers. We additionally assisted the LADOTD with the development of a supplementary geotechnical sampling and laboratory testing program, and provided field oversight of the supplementary geotechnical sampling, along with the advanced pile and drilled pier testing programs.

TRC staff subsequently developed an advanced pile and drilled pier testing program to be executed by the LADOTD, provided consultation and review of a pile and drilled pier testing program, evaluated foundation recommendations, and provided as-needed assistance during the bidding process.
