Safety Support for GridStor Zero Emissions Battery Facility

Challenges

GridStor, LLC, is partnering with the City of Goleta in California, and Southern California Edison to construct and operate a Zero Emissions Battery Storage Facility. This facility will support California’s growing power demands while contributing to overall carbon reduction goals. Gridstor, a developer and operator of standalone energy storage facilities, required expert Safety Support for facility construction activities, operations safety guidance, operations and maintenance procedures, and development of corporate safety policy and framework for the organization.

Solutions

TRC partnered with GridStor to provide safety expertise to meet their challenges. Our safety experts traveled to Goleta on a regular basis to develop an understanding of their specific needs. TRC provided construction safety support for the battery facility project including contractor vetting, contractor safety program review, on-site safety observations, hazard/risk identification and mitigation, as well as other services such as permitting and special inspections. Additionally, TRC provided planning and procedural support for the facility including operations safety requirements, procedures covering operations and maintenance, and general corporate safety support, including developing a policy and supporting procedures (such as contractor vetting and reporting requirements).

Results

TRC’s safety support services provided GridStor the foundation for an industry leading safety culture that will allow dynamic and innovative solutions in the power industry. Based on the collaboration, TRC was able to develop a customized safety framework and documentation capable of being scaled up as operations grow. TRC’s involvement in the project has led to a goal of zero injuries on site, the development of a positive and dynamic safety culture, and positive relationships between GridStor and their contractors, stakeholders, the City of Goleta, and the public.
