TRC was retained by a large North American freight railroad to design storm water system improvements at one of its Midwest diesel repair shops in order to help remove oil and diesel fuel from storm water runoff before it was discharged into the city’s sanitary sewer system. Employing Best Management Practices, the resulting improvements included the addition of two new storm water inlets to collect accumulated surface water in low areas of the pavement, two new grate drop inlets placed into the existing storm water sewer, and re-grading and replacement of asphalt in the impacted areas.
Once implemented, the improvements served to successfully direct storm water into the existing system where it would flow into a retention pond and be subsequently treated with an oil/water separator before leaving the site. The improvements to the storm water ponds included the installation of a storm water treatment system (Vortechs® Model 5000 oil/water separator), cleaning of flow lines, installation of bar grates at outfalls, and the installation of oil level and flow sensors in the oil/water separator.
Additionally, TRC provided design and oversight services during construction.
