New York, NY
Reducing vehicle traffic and emissions
Challenges
John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City is one of the busiest airports in the world. It is currently undergoing a multi-billion dollar redevelopment, which includes new terminals, utilities, and roadway systems.
The redevelopment requires the import and export of large volumes of construction materials, soil, concrete, construction and demolition debris, and asphalt.
Solutions
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey commissioned a construction support facility which will perform multiple functions throughout the redevelopment of JFK International Airport, including concrete production at an on-site batch plant, operation of a concrete crushing facility to recycle construction debris that will be repurposed for new construction, and a marine transport facility to move construction material to and from the airport via local waterways. This construction support facility will eliminate approximately 300,000 truck trips on local and regional roadways, reduce emissions associated with the transport of construction material and debris, and promote the Authority’s sustainability goals by encouraging recycling and reuse of construction materials.
Results
Melville, N.Y.-based Modern Efficient Transport and Supply LLC (METS) was awarded the contract to build and operate the on-airport construction support facility.
TRC partnered with METS LLC to provide environmental permitting, stormwater management and compliance services, as well as develop METS’ procedures for material acceptance, import, and export. Additionally, TRC provides support to METS for implementation of approved plans and performs air monitoring, environmental sampling, and weekly inspections in accordance with Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan requirements.
