Project named Grand Award Category Winner for Structural Systems

LOWELL, Mass. – TRC, a leading provider of end-to-end engineering, consulting and construction management solutions fueled by innovative technology, announced today that it has been given a Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Louisiana Chapter for overseeing the I-49 Segment K project in Shreveport.

The $171 million project involved building the final segment of the 36-mile I-49 North corridor from I-220 in Shreveport to the Arkansas state line. TRC was the prime consultant on the project, which involved designing a series of complex ramps and bridges, including the first precast post-tensioned concrete segmental bridge in Louisiana history.

“It’s an honor to have our work on this important project recognized by ACEC,” said Durk Krone, Vice President of Infrastructure Design. “This is a signature piece of Interstate Highway and it required us, through close coordination with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, to think innovatively to create a design that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Our staff and the team of sub-consultants did a fantastic job coming up with innovative solutions to some serious design challenges and ultimately delivered a project that will benefit motorists for generations to come.”

More than 90 TRC employees were involved in the project, which covered a one-mile stretch of highway between the new I-49/I-220 interchange and Martin Luther King Drive to the north.
“As infrastructure funding becomes more difficult to come by, it’s important to celebrate projects such as this,” Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the project. “This interchange is a game-changer for Northwest Louisiana as I-49 continues its evolution as a major north-south thoroughfare throughout the Midwest and South. As DOTD continues to complete these segments, Louisiana is able to facilitate economic growth, create job opportunities, and make critical freight corridors safer and more efficient.”
