TRC Supported The Rebuilding Of An Existing Distribution Substation To Provide An Interconnection To The Kibby Wind Farm.

Challenges Included The Design Of A Temporary Substation To Facilitate The Removal Of The Site’s Existing Substation While Maintaining Distribution Service To The Area Served.

TRC performed engineering, design, project management, construction management, and commissioning activities associated with the Central Maine Power Kibby Wind Project. This project includes the rebuild of an existing 115/34.5kV distribution substation supplying Carrabassett Valley and providing interconnection to the Kibby Wind Farm. Additionally, the project includes major improvements at an additional 115kV substation and improvements at three 34kV substations.

Challenges with this project include the design of a temporary substation to facilitate the removal of the site’s existing substation while maintaining distribution service to the area served. Construction of the new substation requires meeting the needs for future expansion within the confines of the existing property while providing consideration of wetlands, topography, and permitting. Outage sequencing is a major challenge on this project as it impacts a radial transmission line and several generating stations.

Our solution includes the design and management of a project sequence allowing construction of a temporary substation and the outage coordination at several 115kV substations. TRC also designed temporary transmission facilities to minimize the impact on generating stations and maintain local service. TRC additionally provided the required development of technical specifications for Substation Steel, Control House, Civic Construction, Electrical Construction, and Protection Cabinets. Studies needed for Grounding, Lighting, Lightning Protection, and Geotech were also performed by TRC to support the design.
