Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
TRC monitored site work, structural concrete, structural steel, rail placement, metal decking and spray-fireproofing during construction of this transit system improvement project.
TRC was retained by the Construction Manager to provide testing and inspection services during the construction of this major transit system enhancement project in the City of Philadelphia. The $710 million project involved replacing 11,000 feet of elevated support structure, rebuilding six stations, constructing two new train control buildings, and other related improvements. The project was part of a comprehensive $1.5-billion revitalization program for the Market-Frankford line. Construction was accomplished under three contracts – Stations (46th Street, 52nd Street, 56th Street, and 60th Street), Guideway (elevated track between the stations), and Cobb’s Creek (63rd Street and Millbourne stations and the guideway between them).
Specific aspects of construction that were monitored by TRC’s staff included site work (soil compaction, preparation of foundation subgrades, backfilling of foundations, and pile – driving activities), structural concrete (both cast in place and precast), erection of structural steel, placement of new rails, metal decking, and spray-fireproofing.
During concrete placement operations, TRC’s team of ACI certified technicians was assigned to ensure the quality of all concrete material being used. Our personnel performed slump and air-entrainment tests, molded cylinder specimens for compressive strength testing in our AASHTO/ASTM-accredited laboratory, and monitored the water cement ratios and batch proportions being used.
All soil testing and concrete compressive strength testing was completed in TRC’s AASHTO / ASTM accredited laboratory.
