Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania and Maryland
The Conowingo Hydroelectric Project Dam is located on the Susquehanna River in two states (Pennsylvania and Maryland), four counties (Lancaster, York, Cecil, and Harford), and several townships/municipalities. As such, the Project was subject to many external regulatory and oversight influences operating at these various levels, in addition to Federal agency requirements. The impoundment and downstream reach includes 61 miles of shoreline. The Project was the last hydroelectric project on the Susquehanna River prior to the river emptying into Chesapeake Bay. The facility is capable of generating 573 megawatts of electricity.
TRC was responsible for the relicensing process covering all aspects of recreation and land management including: recreation inventory and issue investigations, recreation studies, consultation, recreation and land management sections for the FERC license application and also the future development of the Project Recreation Plan and Shoreline Management Plan (SMP). In addition to relicensing responsibilities, TRC also assisted the client with ongoing recreation and land management issues during the licensing process in order to avoid conflicting requests and land uses that could impact the relicensing process.
