Belgium Port of Antwerp Lock Gate and Bridge

TRC to provide Quality Assurance services for the fabrication of two sea lock gates and two bascule bridges.

Representatives from Jan De Nul group approached TRC to provide Quality Assurance (QA) services for the fabrication of two sea lock gates and two bascule bridges for the Port Authority of Antwerp, Belgium. The fabrication took place at a Chinese fabrication facility in Shanghai, China. TRC representatives assisted Jan De Nul and the fabricator to prepare for a successful pre-fabrication audit conducted by the Port Authority of Antwerp. The success of this pre-fabrication audit allowed the fabricator to immediately commence with many of the routine pre-fabrication activities including personnel qualification testing, mock ups and generation of shop detail drawings. Approximately 12,000 tons of steel was fabricated at this facility and took approximately 18 months to complete.

The Municipal Port Authority of Antwerp, Belgium commissioned a joint venture consisting of five companies, Jan De Nul, CEI-De Meyer, Betonac, Herbosch-Kiere and Antwerpse Bouwwerken, to construct a second lock in the Waaslandhaven on the left bank of the River Scheldt. The contract value was in excess of €272m ($352.8m USD). The construction of the new lock in the Waaslandhaven is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Flanders. At present, the Waaslandhaven is only accessible for shipping via the Kallosluis lock, which has already reached its maximum capacity. A second lock was needed in the Waaslandhaven in order to allow shipping traffic there to continue to expand. The project took 53 months, during which time 800,000 m³ of concrete was poured, 55,000 tons of reinforcing steel put in place and 12,000 tons of steel used for building the lock gates and bridges.
