The purpose of this course is to provide theoretical and hands-on training on the fundamentals and application of IEC 61850 and GOOSE messaging in addition to best work practices and methods for testing and commissioning 61850-enabled protection and control schemes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Explain IEC 61850 concepts and terminology such as GOOSE Messages, MMS, and Sampled Values.
- Describe the application of IEC 61850 and implementation by different IED vendors.
- Utilize device or settings documentation to determine basic information about how an IEC 61850 enabled device operates.
- Understand planning and performing isolation and restoration of IEC 61850 enabled devices.
- Determine specific equipment and procedure requirements for completing testing and commissioning of IEC 61850 enabled schemes.
LEARNING EXPERIENCE
This course is designed to provide hands-on lab experience where participants gain an understanding of IEC 61850 protocol and gain confidence in performing commissioning tasks in a safe environment.
PREREQUISITES
- Understanding of power system protection and control and communication theory and application
- Working knowledge of substation circuit testing and commissioning
- Experience in relay testing and an understanding of relay logic
