Digital Data Speeds Electrification Project Below Active Railroad

Challenge

A prominent Northeast electric utility needed support for their design and planning of a horizontal drilling project to install an underground conduit below an active railroad line. They needed an organization to support subsurface drilling, testing, and aquifer characterization concurrently for three groups within the utility and report back all the necessary data.

They choose TRC to perform environmental and geotechnical drilling at several locations on either side of the active rail lines and coordinate access to third-party properties.

Solution

TRC’s integrated services approach and digital platform Connected EnviroView allowed multiple teams across TRC to work together and share data. As part of the drilling and construction program, TRC collected and consolidated data across many disciplines and activities.

• Soil and ground water samples for geotechnical and chemical analysis and follow-up testing.
• Soil and ground water chemistry data to the client’s resource recovery group to aid in the planning of waste management during construction.
• Geotechnical evaluation services (including analysis in our in-house laboratory) to facilitate the design of the proposed horizontal drilling program.
• Hydrogeologic testing to estimate the volume of water to be managed during construction and to determine what types of environmental discharge permits would be required.

Result

Coordination and data sharing between all parties allowed TRC to consolidate field work and avoid duplicative site visits and work. TRC sent out one inspector trained in both geotechnical and environmental data and coordinated field sampling plans to optimize the data and observations obtained from each location. TRC’s Connected EnviroView digital data collection, management, and visualization platform allowed field observations and laboratory analytical data to be shared between all TRC teams and the client’s internal groups, which resulted in 50 percent fewer field mobilizations to collect data and a quicker turnaround time on geotechnical reporting.
