Development of Corporate Sustainability Strategy and GRI Report

Flakeboard is the largest manufacturer of composite panels in North America. The use of renewable and often recycled wood fiber—along with a strong commitment to its employees and community—is a key part of their core business strategy. Beginning in 2011 Flakeboard sought to formalize and enhance its sustainability program to increase transparency and implement formal EHS management systems.

Working with Flakeboard’s internal cross functional team, TRC developed the company’s first Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) report for external disclosure in 2013. Using a systematic approach, TRC facilitated the creation of a sustainability strategy that evaluated the issues of materiality, stakeholder engagement, and metrics setting in a manner aligned with the Flakeboard’s culture and business goals and objectives.

Flakeboard’s ongoing commitment to compliance assurance and improved Environmental Health and Safety Systems includes the development of management systems certified to the international ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards. TRC facilitated a series of implementation workshops to develop the management systems for all Flakeboard sites in the U.S. and Canada and continues to lead Flakeboard through every phase of this process—from strategy, procedures, training, auditing and through to implementation and certification.

Flakeboard’s sustainability program is strong, more transparent and fully integrated with its business objectives. It is focused on metrics that are relevant to driving overall business performance, while also ensuring day to day EHS compliance and enhancing their commitment to their core values.
