A leading petrochemical manufacturer needed a modern, comprehensive system to manage and share continuous air monitoring data collected around its refinery perimeter. The facility operated multiple gas chromatographs to measure volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene and 1,3-butadiene, along with meteorological stations tracking wind, temperature and pressure.
Before partnering with TRC, the client relied on passive two-week monitoring methods, which made it difficult to identify and respond quickly to elevated VOC detections or pinpoint their sources. Building on a long-standing partnership that included engineering design, groundwater and air monitoring and infrastructure inspections, the client engaged TRC to modernize its air monitoring program.
Our experts designed, installed and maintained a network of real-time electronic gas chromatograph (eGC) monitoring stations strategically located across the refinery. Each station integrates continuous VOC measurements with high-quality meteorological data, enabling near-instant correlation between detected concentrations and potential source areas.
To further enhance performance and data accessibility, we developed a centralized digital platform that automates QA/QC processes, unifies all monitoring inputs and provides secure, validated data sharing. Our team also trained the client’s environmental staff to interpret system outputs and leverage analytics for operational decisions.
