Challenge

An automotive manufacturer requested support for reporting under the US EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Program. The project demanded a quick turnaround and involved an in-depth analysis of operations across four manufacturing facilities located in MO, IN, TN, and KY, each with distinct capabilities.

Solution

TRC facilitated several multiple remote meetings with site management to develop a comprehensive understanding of key processes influencing reporting requirements. Calculations were developed and tailored to each facility and encompassed all aspects of TRI reporting, including material usage, threshold evaluation, and release reporting. Follow-up meetings were held with site management to review the calculations and confirm accuracy prior to submission. Additionally, a guide was developed to streamline the transition from calculations to reporting within the online web portal.

Results

The calculation process provided a valuable tool for current and future TRI reporting at the client’s facilities. The tailored spreadsheets were developed with simplicity in mind, enabling data input for future reporting years. TRI reports for the 2024 calendar year were successfully completed ahead of the deadline. The client expressed satisfaction with the results, which have led to broader discussions regarding EHS management of material usage and reporting across multiple sites.
