Solutions for Reopening K-12 Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic

As school systems across the country prepare for reopening this fall, millions of students, teachers and staff will once again share classrooms, cafeterias and other common areas, raising the risk of community spread of COVID-19. Modifications to cleaning routines of classrooms and common areas will be needed to prevent further disease spread. Current cleaning procedures will have to be revised and retrofits to common areas may be needed to minimize points of likely contamination.

TRC recently presented two webinars nationally to K-12 school leaders, administrators and school board members. Our panel of experts weighed in on COVID-19 and routes of transmission, how schools are preparing to reopen, the pros and cons of different cleaning methods, legal EHS considerations for school reopening, how to put together the right plan for reopening your schools and reimbursement options for additional COVID-19 related costs.

On the evening of July 23, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released their updated recommendations for returning to school. This link will take you to the updated materials focused on preparing for the return to the classroom as well as operating your schools during this pandemic.

Additionally, we have provided some other resources below to help schools navigate reopening their facilities safely.

TRC works with education institutions across the country in the fight against COVID-19. Our team can provide cleaning verification services to confirm that proper cleaning was conducted, work with cleaning crews to revise procedures to comply with CDC guidelines and train cleaning personnel on new processes and required PPE. We utilize our data platform Connected EnviroView, to deliver a digital GIS-enabled, time-stamped data management solution to document cleaning activities, track program performance and mitigate risk.
