Project
Walnut Springs Trail Extension
Design and construction solutions that preserve historic and natural environments and enhance safety and connectivity for pedestrians.
Challenge
The City of Seguin, Texas needed to enhance pedestrian connectivity and walkability as part of its urban development plan. They required a seamless trail connection from Pecan Bottom Trail Loop in Max Starcke Park East to existing trails near the Seguin Public Library, ensuring accessibility and compliance with ADA, TDLR, TAS and AASHTO standards. The city also sought to protect the historical Hugman walls and natural environment along Walnut Branch Creek.
Solutions
TRC designed and oversaw the construction of a continuous 4-mile trail connecting New Braunfels Street to Max Starcke Park East. The project involved the installation of more than 2,800 linear feet of 10-foot-wide sidewalks, a 360-linear-foot pedestrian bridge, three trails, and retaining walls along Walnut Branch Creek. Our team provided full construction plans, specifications and environmental services, ensuring compliance with TxDOT’s Quality Assurance Program. Periodic construction inspections were conducted with an average of 20 hours per week dedicated to oversight.
Results
The completed trail enhanced walkability in the area and meets all relevant accessibility and safety standards. The city was able to successfully preserve the historic Hugman walls and protect local vegetation and wildlife, thanks to the environmental measures implemented during the project. This project contributes to a safer, more accessible pedestrian infrastructure for Seguin residents, providing them with an extended, continuous trail network.
