They are now projecting growth in demand of 60% over the next 20 years. Other\u00a0grid operators\u00a0and utilities are reporting similar spikes in demand that make this the steepest load curve our industry has seen since the first half of the 20<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0century.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Explosive growth in power demands for data centers and AI factories\u00a0is\u00a0a major driver\u00a0of the fundamental shift in the demand curve.\u00a0<\/span>Data center campuses requiring 300\u2013500 MW of power have become increasingly common,\u00a0comparable to the electricity demand of hundreds of thousands of homes concentrated in\u00a0a single location.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Headlines increasingly\u00a0describe\u00a0facilities expected to use more than 1 GW of power. These projects are being built on tech-company timelines\u2014months, not years\u2014which is far faster than the planning, permitting, and regulatory processes typical of the heavily regulated utility industry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But data centers are not the only source of demand. The trend toward greater electrification of the economy is pushing baseline load\u00a0higher\u00a0as the grid needs to support\u00a0transportation electrification,\u00a0residential and office buildings shifting to electrical heating, electrification of industrial plants, digital transformation across every industry and more. As an industry, this marks a transition into a new era that requires an improved model for integrated capacity planning\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 planning that integrates generation, transmission and distribution with load location,\u00a0timing\u00a0and real-world delivery constraints.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Megatrend 2: Grid Constraints, Interconnection Queues\u00a0and\u00a0the \u201cAll-of-the-Above\u201d Energy Strategy\u00a0<\/h3>\n

In addition to the unprecedented demand pressures I discussed above, our industry will also face intensifying supply-related challenges in\u00a02026. Congestion, capacity constraints, multi-year interconnection\u00a0delays\u00a0and rising reliability expectations are creating escalating challenges that simply cannot be solved with traditional approaches to resource planning. Interconnection queues\u00a0remain\u00a0at all-time highs\u00a0\u2013\u00a0slowing\u00a0renewable\u00a0development,\u00a0other forms of new generation, as well as data center growth and industrial load expansion.\u00a0And transmission congestion is driving curtailment, market\u00a0volatility\u00a0and the need for new long-line investments. In the face of these challenges and the sharp growth in load demand, utilities cannot\u00a0maintain\u00a0the status quo of incremental changes to a non-diversified portfolio of energy production resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To respond to these constraints and backlogs, 2026\u00a0presents a pivotal opportunity for utilities to\u00a0take significant steps toward building broader, more diversified generation portfolios based on an \u201call of the above\u201d energy strategy\u00a0that includes not only the physical\u00a0grid but all the digital infrastructure as well.\u00a0This will increase diversification,\u00a0capacity\u00a0and flexibility in ways that balance reliability,\u00a0sustainability\u00a0and affordability.\u00a0To increase diversification, utilities should continue to expand\u00a0renewables\u00a0that are paired with BESS to firm variable resources.\u00a0Utilities should also adopt a near-term plan to increase gas-fired generation and repowering of combined cycle units\u00a0that inherently provide\u00a0firm capacity. Increasing the use of gas and\u00a0LNG\u00a0pipeline networks will enable utilities to expand dispatchable generation in ways that enable them to meet immediate load growth as electrification climbs.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>U.S. ranks<\/span><\/a>\u00a0among the world\u2019s most resource-rich countries for natural gas, with both substantial\u00a0proven\u00a0reserves and vast recoverable resource estimates, supporting its role as a key firm capacity source in diversified generation portfolios.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the longer term, nuclear power is\u00a0likely the\u00a0answer to meet projected demand in ways that are sustainable, but this will take time.\u00a0Nuclear based solutions\u00a0should include the use of both Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to add smaller, flexible baseload and\u00a0conventional\u00a0nuclear\u00a0to add baseload in larger blocks. For some utilities, it may also make sense to extend the life of\u00a0coal-powered plants\u00a0with\u00a0appropriate emissions controls\u00a0to meet high growth in demand in locations where short-term capacity gaps exist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Megatrend 3: Infrastructure Buildout vs. Customer Affordability \u2014 The Toughest Balancing Act\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Engineering, construction, systems operators, field\u00a0crews\u00a0and\u00a0project management\u00a0resources are in short supply. And the high average age of the utility industry\u2019s workforce\u00a0has created\u00a0retirement cliffs,\u00a0accelerating these workforce\u00a0shortages\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0exact time we need that\u00a0expertise\u00a0to navigate\u00a0all\u00a0the major challenges discussed above.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2026, these workforce challenges are projected to be even more severe, but there is a major opportunity for utilities to turn that challenge into an opportunity.\u00a0The goal of these applications is not to replace people.
