Define Success Early \u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During the early stages of management system design and implementation, businesses and organizations may overlook the importance of and may fail to recognize the appropriate investment that is sufficient to conceptualize what successful EHS&amp;S performance looks like. When the primary reason for a formal management system becomes \u201cbecause our customer requires it\u201d or any of the numerous other reasons that don\u2019t recognize the material benefits that can be achieved, the opportunities for deep and meaningful improvements are often missed<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Worse yet,\u00a0EHS&amp;S Management\u00a0Systems\u00a0can become an onerous burden\u00a0to the\u00a0business or\u00a0organization\u00a0instead of a useful tool; eliminating or minimizing the return on the\u00a0initial\u00a0investment.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EHS&amp;S Management Systems must be designed and implemented with the future outcomes they want to create in mind. They are essential tools for navigating a journey that begins with an honest assessment of the current state and a vision for the future state. This vision is frequently reshaped by internal and external changes and revised by expectations for improved performance based on multiple and sometimes contradictory priorities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Businesses and organizations do not achieve the perfect definition of success at the beginning of their EHS&amp;S journey, as future risk assessments, setting goals and objectives, management reviews and other processes commonly built into effective management systems will lead to improved understanding of the definitions associated with success. Both Leadership and Engagement Matter a Great Deal\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leadership sets the tone for EHS&amp;S success.\u00a0Senior leaders that send\u00a0the message\u00a0through\u00a0words and actions that\u00a0\u201cEHS&amp;S\u00a0improvement and\u00a0excellence\u00a0is what we do and\u00a0not just how we comply\u201d\u00a0are critical to establishing a\u00a0culture\u00a0of\u00a0employee\u00a0empowerment and enablement,\u00a0and\u00a0considered\u00a0a critical component\u00a0for high levels of\u00a0engagement\u00a0when designing, implementing and maintaining the EHS&amp;S Management System.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Effective employee engagement\u00a0requires\u00a0a foundation of two-way communication\u00a0and meaningful interaction\u00a0between leadership and employees. However, some\u00a0businesses or\u00a0organizations fall short, relying primarily on one-way communication with minimal employee involvement\u00a0or feedback.\u00a0A few examples of how\u00a0businesses\u00a0or\u00a0organizations tend to\u00a0discourage\u00a0meaningful engagement\u00a0of its employees\u00a0and contractors\u00a0include:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hazard identification, risk\u00a0assessments\u00a0and mitigation strategies\u00a0that\u00a0are developed with little to no input from frontline employees\u00a0and engaged contractors, undermining their participation and ownership in the process.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Training programs that focus solely on informing employees and contractors of mandatory requirements often delivered in the shortest time possible, lack interactive elements, use the same presentations year over year and\/or have outdated content. These shortcomings can limit employee engagement and reduce the overall impact of the training.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Accident and incident investigations\u00a0that\u00a0are poorly conducted\u00a0by\u00a0undervaluing or excluding employee\u00a0and\/or contractor\u00a0input.\u00a0This approach can lead to low motivation,\u00a0apathy\u00a0and detachment from EHS&amp;S goals\u00a0and\u00a0objectives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leaders and managers are often the experts at how work should be done,\u00a0but\u00a0frontline employees are experts at how work\u00a0actually gets\u00a0done.\u00a0For this reason, building hazard identification, risk assessment, training, accident\/incident investigations, and other key EHS&amp;S processes that\u00a0establish\u00a0effective,\u00a0two-way communication between these two groups\u00a0is essential\u00a0for success.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Employee\u00a0engagement\u00a0is at\u00a0the heart of any successful EHS&amp;S system.\u00a0While not the only contributors to building effective employee engagement, visible commitment to EHS&amp;S by\u00a0senior\u00a0leadership\u00a0in both words\u00a0and actions,\u00a0and effective\u00a0two-way\u00a0communication and interaction between\u00a0leadership and frontline employees are\u00a0the\u00a0cornerstones\u00a0for an effective EHS&amp;S management system.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>4. Technical and regulatory complexity, risk severity and likelihood, and areas requiring cross-functional collaboration should inform this assessment. Based on the findings, businesses or organizations can determine whether to source the needed SMEs internally, externally, or through a combination of both \u2014 either on a long-term basis or temporarily as needed while investing in the development of internal skills.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:1080}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>EHS&amp;S Policy<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Well-crafted EHS&amp;S\u00a0policies\u00a0clearly\u00a0communicate\u00a0a commitment to EHS&amp;S\u00a0performance\u00a0by\u00a0setting clear direction and establishing expectations\u00a0and\u00a0enabling\u00a0individuals to act\u00a0in accordance with\u00a0the\u00a0established\u00a0EHS&amp;S\u00a0goals and\u00a0objectives.\u00a0Moreover,\u00a0they\u00a0should be\u00a0developed based upon the\u00a0unique\u00a0context and\u00a0stakeholder expectations\u00a0and need to be updated when\u00a0impactful\u00a0changes to\u00a0either of these\u00a0key considerations\u00a0occur.\u00a0Lastly, the\u00a0business or organization\u00a0must\u00a0validate\u00a0its\u00a0policy(ies)\u00a0through its use\u00a0that\u00a0inform decisions and guide actions\u00a0related to EHS&amp;S\u00a0performance.\u00a0Examples of such use should be widely communicated\u00a0to\u00a0inform\u00a0employees and stakeholders\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0commitments\u00a0according to the tenants contained in the policy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Goals and\u00a0Objectives\u00a0Based on\u00a0SMART Targets\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Establishing\u00a0goals and\u00a0objectives\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0fundamental\u00a0component\u00a0of\u00a0how a\u00a0business or\u00a0organization defines\u00a0and measures\u00a0its\u00a0EHS&amp;S performance.\u00a0EHS&amp;S\u00a0goals should be informed by\u00a0the needs and expectations of\u00a0internal and external stakeholders,\u00a0health and safety risk assessments,\u00a0significant environmental aspects,\u00a0compliance obligations,\u00a0workplace\u00a0inspections\u00a0and incident investigations.
