WINDSOR, Conn. <\/strong>\u2013 TRC has been awarded funding under New York State\u2019s NextGen Buildings Innovation Challenge to advance two new projects focused on accelerating the decarbonization of residential and commercial buildings through intelligent electric load control technologies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The awards, administered by\u00a0the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)<\/a>, will enable TRC\u2019s team to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0and commercialize market-ready solutions that improve energy efficiency, electrify end uses and support grid resilience,\u00a0key pillars of New York\u2019s climate strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Advancing Decarbonization Across\u00a0Commercial and\u00a0Residential\u00a0Markets\u00a0<\/h2>\n

TRC\u2019s first awarded project will\u00a0develop and\u00a0field-test\u00a0OpenBOS<\/a>, an open-source intelligent building control platform designed for Small-to-Medium Commercial Buildings (SMCBs). The project, conducted in partnership with\u00a0Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL),<\/a>\u00a0will integrate advanced algorithms and control strategies into\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0control\u00a0platforms\u00a0of three\u00a0commercial partners:\u00a0Elexity<\/a>, Community Energy Labs<\/a>, and ACE IoT Solutions<\/a>. Initial demonstration sites include the North Syracuse School District and Syracuse University.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The second project focuses on the \u2264100-amp residential market,\u00a0a critical segment for\u00a0equitable\u00a0decarbonization. In collaboration with SPAN, Halco, and LBNL, TRC will\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0smart panel retrofits and electric load-management technologies across 100 homes in upstate New York. The project also includes\u00a0development\u00a0of an electrification pattern book, guidance for\u00a0permit approvals, and engagement with local authorities and state programs to streamline implementation pathways.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Supporting the State\u2019s Energy Transition<\/h2>\n

The NextGen Buildings Innovation Challenge is a multi-year initiative providing more than $45 million in funding to\u00a0date,\u00a0accelerating\u00a0the development and deployment of advanced building technologies. These include ground source heat pumps, intelligent controls, and high-performance building envelopes\u2014technologies central to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, which account for over a third of New York\u2019s annual emissions.\u00a0<\/p>\n
