M\u00eame une lentille r\u00e9siduelle de NAPL laiss\u00e9e dans les s\u00e9diments peut provoquer la formation de l\u2019\u00e9clat pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la fin du dragage. Cependant, les bouchons de sable traditionnels n\u2019emp\u00eachent pas la migration du NAPL de goudron de houille entra\u00een\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9blouir \u00e0 travers le bouchon et dans la colonne d\u2019eau sus-jacente. De m\u00eame, les bouchons modifi\u00e9s ne servent qu\u2019\u00e0 retarder la lib\u00e9ration future du NAPL et la formation de l\u2019\u00e9clat qui en r\u00e9sulte. Et parce que les bouchons imperm\u00e9ables n\u2019arr\u00eatent pas la poursuite de la biod\u00e9gradation bact\u00e9rienne et de la formation de gaz, les bulles de gaz peuvent s\u2019accumuler sous des bouchons imperm\u00e9ables et provoquer un soul\u00e8vement \u00e9ventuel, entra\u00eenant une rupture physique du bouchon, ou ils migrent autour du bouchon dans la colonne d\u2019eau.
