In 2020 there were an estimated 4.2 million trucks operated by businesses or governments with 15 or more vehicles \u2013 2.3 times the number of cars in similar fleets,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bts.gov\/content\/us-automobile-and-truck-fleets-use-thousands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fleets \u2013 with their regular daily mileage, return-to-base operations, and laser focus on operational costs \u2013 are a prime candidate for vehicle electrification.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities\u2019 existing relationships with local governments and large business customers make them well positioned to support fleet electrification efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The nascent electric pickup era now opens the door to a massive new market for utility and other transportation electrification programs to finally grab these low-hanging fruit.<\/p>\n<p>Automotive start-up Rivian appears poised to be the first to the consumer truck market with its R1T truck due to begin deliveries this month. Ford\u2019s F-150 Lightning \u2013 the all electric version of the most popular vehicle in America \u2013 is set to hit lots next spring, followed by the General Motors\u2019 electric Hummer and Chevy Silverado, the quirky Tesla Cybertruck, and more through 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7605 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph-1024x565.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph-1024x565.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph-768x424.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph-1087x600.jpg 1087w, https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph-905x500.jpg 905w, https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph-700x387.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.trccompanies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1b00b0d1-electric-truck-comparison-graph.jpg 1427w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While few fleets are likely to shell out $80,000 for the reincarnated Hummer, TRC\u2019s analysis for one client fleet shows that even a $70,000 EV can compete on cost with a comparable gas-hybrid vehicle priced at $40,000 \u2013 at least in California where upfront and ongoing incentives stack up quickly.<\/p>\n<p>After significant federal and local purchase incentives, fuel and maintenance savings, and California\u2019s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) credit values are factored in, the cost per mile of the luxury-branded electric Rivian\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW70147932\">is just\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW70147932\">three cents<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW70147932\">, or\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW70147932\">about 7<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW70147932\">% more<\/span>\u00a0over the vehicle\u2019s 10-year life, compared to a Toyota Highlander hybrid.<\/p>\n<p>And fleets \u2013 particularly municipal fleets that rely on half-ton pickups for their versatility \u2013 are eagerly awaiting their arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Interviews with more than a dozen city and county fleet and sustainability managers, conducted on behalf of a midwestern utility, found that availability of EVs that meet their fleet\u2019s needs (more simply put: trucks) was the primary barrier to greater fleet electrification and participation in the utility\u2019s EV infrastructure programs. The municipalities interviewed showed significant interest in those utility offerings, but most noted it would be a few years before they would start to see availability of the types of vehicles they were looking to procure.<\/p>\n<p>Utilities that have pilots or programs in place today or soon to launch will be best positioned to meet commercial customers\u2019 needs once the electric pickup market starts heating up.<\/p>\n<p>The next concern on fleet managers\u2019 minds?
